AEO fundamentals
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of making useful information easier for answer systems to find, understand and reference. For a business, the aim is to be accurately represented when someone asks a relevant question—not merely to add the words ‘AI’ to a search strategy.

The answer becomes part of the discovery journey
Traditional search commonly presents links that a person evaluates and opens. An answer interface may combine information from several sources into a response before the person visits any website. That makes accurate product descriptions, clear constraints and supporting evidence useful at the point of discovery.
Imagine a buyer asking for scheduling software that supports several clinics. A page that clearly states location support, appointment rules, integration requirements and pricing conditions gives the system specific information to work with. A page containing only ‘the ultimate solution for your business’ gives it very little.
AEO starts with ordinary website fundamentals
Important pages need working URLs, discoverable links and readable content. Explain what the business offers, who it serves and where its limits are. Put the core answer near the relevant heading, then provide examples and evidence a reader can inspect.
Use structured data when it accurately describes visible content. It should reinforce the page, not invent ratings, credentials or features. No special AI schema can guarantee that an answer engine will include a company. Google's guidance for its AI search features continues to emphasize foundational SEO and useful content.
A practical starting sequence
A technical audit identifies implementation issues. Editorial review checks accuracy and usefulness. AI visibility samples help observe how particular models respond. Doing one of these tasks does not replace the others.
- List the questions customers ask before buying, including constraints and objections.
- Map each question to a page that can answer it honestly.
- Resolve access problems on those pages: errors, accidental noindex rules and broken internal links.
- Add specific product details, examples and clearly attributed evidence.
- Publish changes and verify the content actually returned by the live site.
- Track a stable set of relevant questions and inspect the answers over time.
Measure useful outcomes
Treat citation and mention trends as directional evidence. Where your analytics allow it, look at qualified visits, signups and customer conversations as well. Keep a record of prompt wording, model configuration and run dates so a change in the test is not mistaken for a change in visibility.
AEO is an ongoing process of making the business understandable and checking the result. It is not a promise that a technical checklist will turn into a recommendation, and it should not require publishing dozens of repetitive pages that add no new information.
