SEO, AEO and GEO: what changes?
SEO, AEO and GEO describe overlapping ways to improve discovery. The terminology is not perfectly standardized. The useful distinction is the result you are trying to improve and the evidence you use to measure it.

Compare the goal, output and measurement
These categories overlap. A strong product page can support search results and AI answers at the same time. Different platforms also use different retrieval and presentation systems, so a result from one engine should not be generalized to all the others.
| Approach | Primary focus | Examples of evidence |
|---|---|---|
| SEO: search engine optimization | Findable, relevant pages in search results | Index coverage, impressions, clicks and useful visits |
| AEO: answer engine optimization | Accurate, useful representation in direct answers | Answer inclusion, brand mentions and cited sources |
| GEO: generative engine optimization | How generative systems discover and synthesize a business | Sampled responses, citation patterns and factual accuracy |
Keep measurements separate
A website audit measures implementation. Search performance data measures search behavior. A model-response sample measures the response produced by a particular prompt and configuration. A score from one system is not a substitute for evidence from another.
If mentions improve after a release, retain the before-and-after answers and record other changes that could explain the result. If clicks fall while impressions remain stable, inspect the affected queries and pages before attributing the change to AI. The labels are useful only if they help you ask a more precise question.
Choose work by the bottleneck
Astle AI separates the technical audit, repository fix and API tracking workflows for this reason. You can investigate one bottleneck without pretending that every issue is a visibility problem.
- If important pages cannot be reached, fix crawl access and linking first.
- If readers cannot understand the offering, improve the product explanation and supporting evidence.
- If the business is described incorrectly, identify the contradictory or outdated sources.
- If you cannot tell whether anything changed, set up a repeatable measurement process.
